5/5 Piggies
Synopsis: Jake lost his wife and unborn daughter on a West Texas highway when three police officers abused their authority. The pigs thought they had got off scot-free until Jake took justice into his own hands.
First thing first – I’ve waited way too long to pick up Wade’s work. Truth? I’m the farthest thing from a book snob – we know this, but… I think that (maybe) I did judge the books by their covers at first ::cringe:: I know! It’s inexcusable! I realized I’d misjudged Wade when I read his short in Matt Shaw’sThe Devil’s Guests. So, I picked up Insane Bastards right when it came out, (the synopsis sucked me right in!), and knew I had been missing out. (Dark & twisted humor gets me every time!) I went ahead and grabbed the complete “A Glimpse into Hell” series instead of picking them up one by one, and I’m glad I did because I couldn’t stop!
PIGS is an extremely satisfying story!
If you’re ever been in a situation involving the cops, you know it’s hard to remain calm, and if you’re being bullied by that superiority complex in a blue suit – your blood just boils in your helpless body. You might think you know what Jake was going through when he was pulled over while rushing his pregnant wife to the ER, but you have no idea! That shit is infuriating! I was getting pissed when I was reading, and The Dark Defender told me to be quiet – twice.
Wade’s writing goes next level sick & twisted, but… all of his torture is very original, and there are damn good stories under all the carnage! Every time I had to stop reading because life came calling I was so frustrated! Learn from my mistake, and don’t hesitate to grab anything of his. They’re all available with KU, too.
You gotta love Shakespearean word play THIS damn good!
They only wanted to stay one night. But one night can last a lifetime at… THE LAST MOTEL.
The Lodgepole Pine Motel is the setting for nerve-wracking terror when a group of unsuspecting travelers find themselves trapped in a nightmare of violence and mayhem. Madge Fraiser is the kindly old owner of the rustic mountain hideaway, which, during one long night, will become awash with blood, as the guests are stalked one by one by a sadistic killer. Who will live to see the dawn, and who will learn that this is one motel where checking in can be murder?
Here’s a great question for everyone… THE LAST MOTEL was published 07.31.2011 by LegumeMan Books*, (awww… I MISS LegumeMan!!), so why the fukdid I JUST find it?! SOMEONE really should have recommended this to me years ago! Finger Of Shame, my friends. Finger Of Shame.
A husband and wife… A pair of petty criminals… A young man… And a perverse serial killer…
It’s Halloween night, and the Lodgepole motel is seeing more action than it has in years. The owner can feel trouble coming as she checks in each of the guests. None of them can shake the feeling of déjà vuasthey meet, and start to get to know each other. They’ll soon find out they are all linked by events that happened earlier that night – each link/event being more fukked up & twisted than the last!
I’m not going to take the chance of ruining this story for you, so as I’m shutting up – you need to go get this book & read it!! Hurry up, so we can talk about it!! I’m DYING!

When a six-year-old girl is abused and left for dead by a pedophile known only as the “Rabbit Man” due to the claw marks left on her body, police follow every lead but reach only dead ends.
Hungry for justice, her grieving father abandons wife and child on a harrowing journey deep undercover into Miami’s sex offender colony under the Julia Tuttle Causeway. His purpose is simple: to find the “Rabbit Man” among them, and put him in the ground.
Months later, with no one to trust and the pedophiles he lives among growing suspicious of his actions, he learns nothing is simple where the monsters live.
Imagine sitting down to a meal consisting of all your favorite foods. WAIT! Let’s make this even more fun and pretend it’s your last meal before your execution – (yay)!
At first glance, my table would make most people chuckle because my favorite foods do not complement each other well, or at all. (I’m a grown ass woman and can have ice cream and Twinkies for dinner if I want to!).
My book shelf mirrors my dinner table / last meal. Yes… I’m all about the extreme horror. Give me a story filled with buckets of gore, sprinkled with very wrong humor, and of course a gratuitous titty (or three) thrown in, and I’m in a very happy place. BUT… I love ALL flavors of horror. Man cannot live on ice cream alone! Nor can I live on the extreme alone. Plus, [IMHO] there are only a handful of authors who can pull if off successfully – (for MY tastes).
Why the hell am I talking about this? I’m so glad you asked!
REVENGE is a dish best served cold.
Dunc has proven to be quite the ‘master chef’. Reread my review of GRISTLE & BONE – I think it was my first book by Duncan Ralston, and I didn’t know him then. I was floored by the stories in that collection by an author who was unknown to me at the time, and to this day I still go through a moment of mourning when I finish one of his books, not wanting it to come to an end. If you’ve read WOOM then you know he is one of the aforementioned authors who can pull off the extreme without losing the story.
WHERE THE MONSTERS LIVE is NOT an extreme horror story, but I want you to have a little ‘heads up’. It’s not super graphic, but it will sucker punch you right in the feels. It will disturb you a bit, and up the level if you have a child of your own. I didn’t realize I was crying until The Dark Defender woke up to ask me what was wrong, and I had tears streaming down my cheeks.
I got a sinking feeling at one point, because I thought I knew exactly how this story was going to end (we’ll talk about it once you finish). That wouldn’t have made it a suck story – but I’m happy that it didn’t go for the ‘ironic twist’, and I’m very satisfied with how it’s wrapped up – and there could be a little wiggle room JIC case the story isn’t done with us yet.
I don’t think I need to say this, but for the record – ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆ 5/5 STARS!! ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆
Before we wrap this up, please allow me one more moment of inappropriate, and probably unjustified humor here… I cannot remember when or why this popped in my head while reading, but it did, and now it’s going to get stuck in your head, too. #earrape #psychodad

I’m soo happy that I was approved for a pre-publication copy of THE ROANOKE GIRLS from NetGalley and Crown Publishing! (I think I HAVE to say that I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review, but I really hate seeing that as the first line of other reviews. I requested a copy, and was approved -(yay!)- they didn’t seek me out to give me free stuff.)
Synopsis:
After her mother’s suicide, fifteen year-old Lane Roanoke came to live with her grandparents and fireball cousin, Allegra, on their vast estate in rural Kansas. Lane knew little of her mother’s mysterious family, but she quickly embraced life as one of the rich and beautiful Roanoke girls. But when she discovered the dark truth at the heart of the family, she ran – fast and far away.
Eleven years later, Lane is adrift in Los Angeles when her grandfather calls to tell her Allegra has gone missing. Did she run too? Or something worse? Unable to resist his pleas, Lane returns to help search, and to ease her guilt at having left Allegra behind. Her homecoming may mean a second chance with the boyfriend whose heart she broke that long ago summer. But it also means facing the devastating secret that made her flee, one she may not be strong enough to run from again.
As it weaves between Lane’s first Roanoke summer and her return, The Roanoke Girls shocks and tantalizes, twisting its way through revelation after mesmerizing revelation, exploring the secrets families keep and the fierce and terrible love that both binds them together and rips them apart.
I couldn’t put this book down!
I had a hard time at work because it was on my mind, and I needed to know what happened!
No, it’s not exactly the type of book that you normally see reviewed here – (full of blood, depravity, and ‘oh so wrong’ humor), but let that fact help convince you that this is an outstanding story. It’s listed as Mystery / Thriller / Suspense, and I think Psychological Thriller fits nicely.
I always say “I hate comparing books to other works…” blah blah blah, but then I usually go on to do it anyway. Since the author made this comparison herself to another reader I feel better about doing it now 🙂 Amy Engel said it’s a “dark novel along the lines of Gillian Flynn’s books” – (and I fell in love with those!).
Let me give you a slight nudge of a warning… this story goes to some pretty dark places, and might be uncomfortable for some readers. Those readers don’t usually follow The Bloody Book Blogger ::winks:: but… you know… just in case.
Even though I am mainly referring to ‘the devastating secret’ that is lurking there in those dark places – it’s not just the secret that may bug some readers. When Lane comes to grips with that secret, she has a distressing realization about herself as well. A lot of authors wouldn’t tread into this territory for fear of offending readers, but (IMO) it helps us truly understand the characters inner turmoil, and the story is better for it. So – applause to Amy Engel for taking us there, and not trying to be (for lack of a better term :p) ‘PC’ just for sales sake.
I enjoy a lot of the YA titles that I pick up once in a while, so I definitely think I am going to pick up THE BOOK OF IVY series.
AmyEngel is the author of the young adult series The Book of Ivy. A former criminal defense attorney, she lives in Missouri with her family. The Roanoke Girls is her first novel for adults.

We all have ‘those‘ days. You know what I mean… those terrible days when you’ve fallen into a vortex of suck, and every. single. person. you encounter makes you want to stab them in the neck with a fork. Daydreams of murder & mayhem consume us; we mentally debate various body disposal methods, and map out dump sites with a smile on our face while being talked down to by various people with superiority complexes. Wait, what? You don’t? Oh, well… me either. I was talking about someone else. I was referring to my buddy ‘SWIM’, not me.
John is having these days more often than not, and they’re not just at work anymore. He is starting to become a very dark, and angry person. He gets lost in his thoughts as a means of escape, and his imagination is growing darker, and more dangerous each day – until he meets Keith. His unexpected new friend shows him that his life doesn’t have to be boring, or degrading. Life can actually be fun! He can go to new places, do exciting things, meet interesting people… For the first time in his life, John begins to enjoy himself, and he is finally actually happy. However, he soon realizes that Keith is not as he appears. John jumped into this bromance with both feet, and he might have jumped in way too fast. Keith has a [Tyler] ‘Durden-esque’ dark side; he is dangerous. He is rapidly getting out of control, and he is taking John along for the ride – whether he wants to go or not.

“I am Jack’s complete lack of surprise.” ~ Peace, Love & Necrophilia♥ Shadow Girl
A story told by the most patient man in the world, his love at first sight and his obsession to make every perverse sexual fantasy a reality.
Despite the length of this book, it took me a little bit to finish it. I’d get squeamish, and have to put it down – only finding myself wondering what happened next.
Is it sexist to say that I was surprised that it was written by a woman? I hope not, because that’s the last thing that I am. I think that I’m just surprised that Dani Brown has such a strong command of this man’s psyche, and, well… his cock. Some of the detail, and descriptions, are just so spot on – IDK… I’ve seen men write from the women’s perspective, and not many have gotten it down to the point that I’d forget it was a man writing the story.
I didn’t realize this book was just released. I don’t remember how I ran across it, either. Surfing through bizarro blogs, I’m sure, but I wish I could remember exactly. While putting this post together, and gathering links, I found a great #FF – MorbidBooks & The Grim Reverend Steven Rage seem to be linked with LegumeManBooks (GN Braun, Matthew Revert, Bradley Sands, etc.), and that’s bonus points in my book! MorbidBooks has a WP site, (all the cool kids do!) – where everything bleeds, and I’ll most definitely be checking out more of their books, and writers.
I might need a break in between. Maybe go take a few showers, and a few Xanax. Watch some cartoons. Try to start eating again….

SPOOKY STACKS is Halloween book with SS from authors I already know & love, and it was free to download (>.<) FREE makes everything better, but SPOOKY STACKS earned the 5 star rating for it’s content, not it’s price.
“Fast Zombies Suck” – Brian Keene I wholeheartedly agree with this, fast zombies do suck! These things with the RAGE virus… they may be bitey, but they’re not real zombies. Ken thinks this way, too. He wants his zombies traditional, shambling and moaning. He’s been ready for them to come, he’s seen all the movies. He knows what to do when TSHTF, and, it sure looks like today is that day…
“Pizza Face” – Bryan Smith Will Hopkins delivers pizza for a living, but he dreams of getting away, and of a bigger & better life. With one ring of a doorbell, his life is about to change forever – let’s hope he can survive what’s waiting for him on the other side. I think this was my favorite story in this collection. There were a couple points when I made audible sounds, earning me that ‘youre crazy’ look from my husband.
“A Farewell to Arms” – Scott Nicholson Casey & Maleah have holed up in an old barn at the edge of town. They met when the zombies came, and just kind of went in the same direction. They didn’t consciously decide to pair up. Now, though, they must decide if they want to team up, or is it better if they just go their separate ways.
“Cooked” – Jonathan Maberry Billy & Cooter had caused a bit of a ruckus the other day, kidnapping a few flamingos and garden gnomes from someone’s lawn. They thought it was the funniest thing in the world at the time. It’s not so funny anymore.
