OF LONE HEADSTONES [Book One] by Jorge Bocanegra

Published March 25, 2015 by Shadow Girl

Previously titled “Headstone Sonata”.

This novelette is a perfect example of why I started BBB, and why I’m so passionate about supporting indie writers. It also reminds me that I need to thank the person who invented the e-reader, because without my Kindle I would have never found all the amazing books that I’ve read, or met the talent & hearts behind the writing.
(My awesome idea to thank the inventor of the e-reader is posted at the bottom).

OF LONE HEADSTONES combines all 4 verses of the previously published Headstone Sonata, and is the first volume in a series written by new-to-me author Jorge Bocanegra.

“What’s worse, the monsters crawling out of their graves or the ones that we can’t keep buried in our minds?

Joel has long been a victim to the viscous teeth of the assumptions and misconceptions conjured in his own mind concerning his relationship with his girlfriend, Alex. After three years together, things just haven’t been the same. But now, those monstrous doubts in his head will become personified in the form of risen corpses in the city of Orchard.

Will Joel and Alex be able to put aside their differences and survive together? Or will this apocalyptic event spell the perfect opportunity for the couple to go their separate ways?”

OfLoneHeadstones.Cover.

OF LONE HEADSTONES chronicles Joel’s experiences during the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. Surrounded by monsters, each new obstacle he faces triggers inner demons that he has to fight, making survival doubly difficult.
This is a very emotional story.  I had tears in my eyes more than once, feeling literal heart-ache for the characters. There is a scene where Joel finds a boy (named Jorge) hiding from the zombies in a bathroom stall, and that encounter broke my heart in 27 different ways.
I can’t say if these situations are written from a deeply raw & painful place, or if Jorge is just a kick ass writer, but it’s definitely a hard journey to take, and I can’t wait to read more!

I’ll be reading this whole series, so plan on hearing more about Joel.

FEAST OR FAMINE – A Zombie Fiend Anthology

Published August 15, 2014 by Shadow Girl

Survivalists / Preppers are people who have prepared to ensure their safety and continued existence in the event of a catastrophic disaster.
Preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse is something that everyone should think about. When TSHTF, and it’s the end of the world as we know it – zombies may or may not be the cause. It could be war, it could be disease, or even Mother Nature. Whatever the cause, if you’ve prepared for zombies – any other disaster will seem easy to handle.

Next comes the hard part.

Will you help those who have mocked you? Are you ready to defend everything that you’ve worked so hard to establish? What will you do as the government tries to interfere? These are all important decisions that will have to be made!

When the time comes, will you survive – or be caught unprepared?

FeastFamineCover

“DOIN’ WHAT I CAN, WITH WHAT I GOT”

With all due respect to Bowie V. Ibarra, I disagree with you on the most hysterical part of any movie in the TREMORS franchise. What we have in common is that both of our moments include Michael Gross.
My *PMPL moment is when Burt declares – “I’m out of ammo.” At the time, that struck me as the funniest thing EVER.
The sad part is – Burt Gummer SHOULD be the second most quoted movie character of all time – (next to Sir Bruce). If we’re in the same bunker when TSHTF, that will become ‘our thing’. Deal?

The stories in this collection are all centered on survival in the apocalypse. Some people thrive, while others try to survive by force – stealing what they can, and turning against their fellow man.
One woman does what is necessary to survive on her own, while another woman tries to lure her friend over under false pretenses. Relationships are strained as friends turn against friends, and others are saved when couples realize that family comes first.
One man finds the love of his life – 33 minutes before she dies, while another man turns his back on his family to take care of the only thing of importance to him – Himself. Zombies are not the only monsters in this collection, and definitely not the only thing to worry about. These stories show that mankind is usually the worst monster of them all.

Here are a few highlights from this amazing collection –

THE BEGINNING is the first story in the collection, and it sets a tone for the entire book. Sara Gray paints a picture with colors that I never knew existed – and parts of it had a bigger impact on me than I’d thought possible. I don’t want to post spoilers, so I’ll keep this brief… This story of one woman’s survival begins the moment the SHTF, and follows her throughout the z-poc. At one point during this ss, I wanted to curl into a fetal position, cover my head, and cry. Very powerful, and the perfect story to begin this collection.

Alan Dale’s contribution – EAT ME, BITE ME; JUST DON’T IGNORE ME! is another stand out story in F/F. Two survivors in a city over run by the dead look for a way to connect. The distance that separates them could practically be measured by saliva, (spitting distance), but it might as well be miles.

Rick Restucci’s THE HUMAN RACE could easily be made into a movie – probably not as good as the one that played out in my head while reading it, but a good movie nonetheless. A very wealthy survivor finds a way to bring entertainment back to television – in the form of a new reality show.

BRINGING IN THE HARVEST is a unique and enjoyable story. By Introducing new elements into the zombie genre, Carl Fox is a name I’m going to keep an eye on.

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS is a story that I’d contact Bowie about, if he wasn’t already a part of this anthology. Grizz needs to read it for sure!
Jamall K. Luckett ties the zombie story in with with the male soap opera world of wrestling. This ss is going to make a lot of people I know giddy with delight!

The epilogue is from UP FROM THE DEPTHS author J.R. Jackson. I’ve learned more from him than from all those tv survivalists combined! He’s one of the most knowledgeable people in the field. He gives you tips that are usable by the everyday person, and you don’t need a million dollars to get the supplies you need. He also advocates the use of water purification tablets, rather than drinking your own urine, so… BONUS!
When the weekly Survival Chat starts up again, I’ll make an announcement. Until then, you can join in on group discussions at Zombie Fiend.

There are stories of greed, and stories of compassion. Family turning against family, and people trying to make it alone. Each is different, but it’s all about survival. This anthology will make you think. When the shit hits the fan, how will you end up? Feast, or famine?

Would YOU Survive A Horror Movie?

Published October 27, 2013 by Shadow Girl

I Would Survive a Horror Movie
* I made it through the maze of horror without getting myself killed…though I gotta say, I do look a little worse for the wear. (But, I may not be so lucky in the sequel…)

This time of year is the best time of year for TV! If you only get five channels with your ancient TV – PBS will play NOTLD. If you have basic cable – you have at least two choices at any hour of the day. If you get a package cable deal with pay stations… at least you have FEARNet onDemand. :winks: If you get the premier, holy shit, satellite dish, 7000 channels – you probably don’t sleep much during October!
We all like to think that if WE were in that horror movie – we’d kick some ass, we’d NEVER be as stupid as the actors!
We shout at the screen, “Don’t run upstairs!”, “He’s right behind you! Can’t you hear him!?”, and “OMG! take.off.the.high.heels.you.stupid.twit!”
You’re being stalked by a homicidal maniac, all your friends are presumed dead. You’re all alone. WHY ARE YOU TAKING A SHOWER?

Just for fun… here is the Would YOU Survive A Horror Movie? challenge.
I’m interested to see what everyone gets, post your status in the comments so we can make fun of each-other!!

WHAT BOTHERS YOU THE MOST DURING HORROR MOVIES?

Do you have a favorite chase scene? What movie, and why?
*Mine is STILL from the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, Sally is running through the woods in her white bell-bottoms… and what happens…?
She gets her hair tangled in a fuckin’ tree branch! Oh! I have really long hair, and I can imagine that playing out. And…and.. It’s never been redone! How is that possible? Such a great scene, have I missed a rip off scene? Or, does this scene really suck and I’m the only one who loves it??

BBB’s Tips & Tricks For Surviving The Day

Published September 13, 2013 by Shadow Girl

Happy Friday The Thirteenth Horror Lovers!
559297_307369342736856_932351406_n
There is that little inner voice that is whispering things in your ear today, trying to goad you into being a responsible ‘adult‘. It says things like “Unlucky things happen every day” and “Superstition ain’t the way” and “If anything, you’re probably a bit safer today, because many people are hiding out and therefore unable to drop a safe on your head.”
LIES! ALL LIES!
Don’t listen to it.
Have we learned nothing from the multitude of horror movies we’ve watched over the years? At the very least, you should listen to the wisdom taught by Uncle Jason…
547006_418423128261754_678266246_n
‘What does Shadow Girl do on Friday The 13th’, you ask?
I’ll tell you what I do! Besides posting these public service announcements to keep you safe, I do what I do best. I read. This year, I’m reading ASBO by Iain Rob Wright, and I’m going to be going back into recently finished books like THE SUMMER I DIED, STEPHEN KING, HOUSEMATES, and HIT, (among others) to sort my thoughts and tell you about them. I’ve been reading some amazing things, without stopping in between to review or discuss. ::finger of shame:: Bad Blogger! ::slaps hand::
What are you doing today?
You could be reading any number of Friday the Thirteenth themed books instead of rewatching the film franchise as it’s being looped on FX for 36 hours! [Or, you know, you could do that, too. Multi-tasking can be fun for horror hounds on days like today ::winks::]

CAMP BLOOD is the internet home of Jason Voorhees, and lists all the books and graphic novels that are attached to the movies in any way. The YA novels are written by multiple authors, and sound like so much fun… it’s a new quest of mine – to read them all. With lines like “I’ve got a little secret for you. The only time you’re safe―really safe―is when you’re dead.” [―Paul Sexton, Mother’s Day, P. 107], and so many crazy story lines (like in The Jason Strain by Christa Faust and Hate-Kill-Repeat by Jason Arnopp), I’m dying to get my hands on them all!

OK. We’ve covered READING for today. But, what other tips and tricks should you know to keep safe today? You should certainly avoid doing unlucky things!! I know you’re a rebel, but don’t purposely go stepping on sidewalk cracks today. Mothers around the world will thank you. Don’t try to be a bad ass, avoid walking under ladders, don’t run down the mirror isle of IKEA with a cart full of bowling balls, and stay away from umbrellas altogether. Here are 13 More Things You Should Definitely Avoid on Friday the 13th…

1. The internet.
The infamous Jerusalem virus of the ’80s (spread through floppy disks!) destroyed all executable files on infected computers every January 13. On January 13, 1989, the virus hit a bunch of IBM PCs in Britain. Keep the devices off.

2. The stock market.
Friday, the Thirteenth *[free download] was a weird and popular 1907 novel about an evil trader named Bob Brownley, who wreaks havoc on Wall Street. The novel’s helped cement the date’s evil portents in pop culture with inimitably purple prose:
Wall Street has lived through many black Fridays. Some of them have been thirteenth-of-the-month Fridays, but no Friday yet marked from the calendar, no Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday yet garnered to the storehouse of the past was ever more jubilantly welcomed by his Satanic Majesty than yesterday.
And wouldn’t you know, 81 years later, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 190.58 points, on Friday, October 13, 1989 — sure, that’s peanuts compared to the market of today, but why risk it?

3. Vegas.
Tupac Shakur died on Friday the 13th, 1996 after a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.

4. The movies.
Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense, was born on a Friday the 13th, and you don’t want to live his nightmares.

5. The streets.
A 1993 study published in the British Medical Journal found that hospital visits from vehicular accidents increased as much as 52% on Friday the 13th. Stay home.

6. Work
Triskaidekaphobia expert Dr. Thomas Fernsler of the University of Delaware, known as “Dr. 13”, estimates that absenteeism costs the nation billions each Friday the 13th. So why even bother going in?

7. School.
This school caught on fire on Friday the 13th of August, 2010. It could happen again.

8. The air.
Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes on Friday, October 13, 1972. The event is the subject of the movie Alive.

9. The water.
On Friday, January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia hit a rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Italy, partially sinking the ship and killing 30.

10. The outside.
Hurricane Charley made landfall in Cuba on Friday, August 13, 1992. It is still the eighth most destructive Atlantic hurricane in history. On April 13, 2012, a terrible tornado cluster hit the Midwest. Nature is to be respected. Be safe. (I’m using a clip from the weather channel, because the tornado footage from that day makes me cry)

11. The inside.
Even your house is not safe from today’s curse, at least if you want to sell it: housing sales are 32 percent less on the 13th, reports ABC News.

12. Traveling.
On Friday, August 13, 1993, the Royal Plaza Hotel in Nakorn Ratchasima, Thailand, caved in, killing 127 people. All six stories collapsed “swiftly and totally.”

13. Staying put.
According to NASA, an asteroid may SLAM into the Earth on a Friday the 13th in 2029. (Check out the freaky data & sciency stuff!) NASA says scientists are hoping it will not hit on April 13th, but ‘shave’ past us, being the brightest asteroid in recorded history. (Never fear! … There’s still a 3.9 in a million chance that 99942 Apophis will return to collide with us later this century.)

So, what’s left? What should you do this Friday the 13th?

KELLIE’s DIARY By Thomas Jenner & Angeline Perkins

Published May 26, 2013 by Shadow Girl

This is the diary of a nine year old girl who is experiencing the very beginning of the zombie apocalypse, although she doesn’t know that’s what it is. It starts with her classmates getting sick, and staying home from school. While these kids are home, even more are getting sick… school is becoming a ghost town. Kellie’s patents make sure she gets her flu shot, and she continues showing up at school, even when she is one of only six students left in her class.
While she is at school, the monsters come. Kellie has to figure out what to do to survive while there, and if she wants to leave. She needs a plan to get out of the school, and to make it back to her home & family.
Although this book is short, it’s only the first story in the series, and it’s available for free download.
It is in diary form, and the font used is a handwriting font. I couldn’t get it any larger on my Kindle.
