Fun Fact!! I can add Rosie the Riveter to the official Michigan Madmen list! Awesome!
The true identity of Rosie the Riveter has been the subject of considerable debate. For years, the inspiration for the woman in the Westinghouse poster was believed to be Geraldine Hoff Doyle of Michigan, who worked in a Navy machine shop during World War II. Other sources claim that Rosie was actually Rose Will Monroe, who worked as a riveter at the Willow Run Bomber Plant near Detroit. Monroe also was featured in a promotional film for war bonds. Either way, I think we can claim her. YES WE CAN!
Or, I guess what I really mean is WHO are you reading? It’s INTERNAL WOMAN’S DAY, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Women are killin’ it in extreme horror these days, too! They’ve always been there, but they’ve been gaining ground and shaking things up in the Boy’s Club. I don’t think there’s an official count anywhere, but if there was, I’d bet that the winner’s of the 2020 SplatterDome¹ wore heels.
I’m going to be celebrating #IWD2021 by reading one of BBB’s favorite authors, while wearing my favorite pair of CFM pumps, and red lipstick. Sam West, aka Collette Metcalf, just published Langdon Manor: An Extreme Horror Novella in January, and has Tales From The Edge Of The Sea: An Extreme Horror Collection Within A Wraparound Story (available for pre-order), being published this week! (fingers crossed that it’s all based in Broadgate!!! I’m so excited!!!) Sam West has been a name synonymous with splatterpunk for the better part of a decade (you go, Glen Coco!), but she’s also publishing psychological thrillers under the name Collette Heather! KICKING ASS AND TAKING NAMES!There is so much I could say about paving the way, and opening doors, but I’ll save it for another Coffee Talk and just say that she deserves to be read on IWD! (besides if I wait any longer to read this I might die! Or develop a tick of some kind…)
A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. So let’s all choose to challenge. How will you help forge a gender equal world? Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.
Rayne Havok is another name you should recognize. KILLSTREME is the perfect Splatterpunk IWD read, the Girl Power / Sisterhood vibe is strong, and you might feel a little empowered after reading it. Or, you might puke. Either way…
If you’re a regular here, Sea Caummisar’s name should sound very familiar. I don’t know if it was luck, or fate, but I stumbled upon her very first book when it was still the only book, and we’ve been buds ever since. I’m a few reviews behind though, and need to remedy that shit with a quickness!! I just finished Dr. Circumcision, Quack MD, and that was… uncomfortable, to say the very least. Plus, I can’t wait till you hear about My #2 Fan 😱, (available to pre-order now!), and the Sanger Entertainment series is turning out to be a much more than I ever dreamed of!! I’m still astonished at how fast and hard she hit the scene, and made a name for herself. She shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, either. A Splatterpunk IWD could not be had without her – grab a book and celebrate!
There are so many women in Extreme Horror / Splatterpunk these days, so this could be the perfect excuse for you to read someone new. Check out someone above if you haven’t already, or try (in no particular order) Nikki Noir, Monica O’Rourke, DJ Doyle, Allisha McAdoo, Sian Rosé, Christine Morgan, … Ok, I do have things to get done today, and a pantsless Zoom appointment at 3:00. But these should get you started! (If I have brain constipation, and forgot to mention you, please don’t take it personally! I either saved your name for Women In Not So Extreme Horror, another sub-genre like Horrotica, you don’t identity as female anymore, or simply just forgot with no malicious intent. Still friends?)
✒️ AUTHOR CONNECTION 🖋️
I’m still working on the Author Connect pages… waaayy more involved than my initial thoughts, but turning out beautiful so far. Until the official Author Connection goes live, were posting old school …
Sam West / Collette Metcalf: Facebook, Amazon, Goodreads, as Collette Heather on Amazon. You can email her here.
¹No matter how badly I wish it WAS a thing, the SplatterDome is sadly not a thing. It COULD BE, though! Who wants to publish the Girls vs. Boys anthology?! K. Trapp Jones, this has your name all over it! (I’d just like my name in small print in the book somewhere… I’m kidding!! But this idea DOES kick ass in stilleto heels 👠 I’m going to send a copy of this to The Splatter Club and see if anyone else agrees!)
