Mass Hysteria

Stargazing turns into a battle for survival after a freak, alien meteor shower causes everyone, and everything in Falls Breath to go bat-shit crazy (O.o)

I’m usually not much of a sci-fi fan, but this was a fast, furious, and fun read right from page one!

Resolutions Shmesolutions!

Published January 7, 2017 by Shadow Girl

“Each new year begins in a snow-storm of white vows.”

I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions. I lie to myself practically every day, so why should those lies be any different than these lies? They certainly don’t deserve their own bullet pointed, color coded, sparkly sticker-d “BETTER ME” list to stare their judgmental stare at me from atop the refrigerator door! How about a big ol’ NOPE to any empty, and unrealistic Resolutions of 2017?!

“Are we really doing this again, SG?”
~ signed, Resolutions Past

I just read an article/post on Buzzfeed that made me think “Here’s a realistic resolution that I can really get behind!” (yes, my inner voice talks like Dr. Seuss.) It IS going to be a difficult promise to keep to myself, though – some quirks run deep, and habits are hard to break. Bear with me on this long & winding road that is my thought process…

“A resolution is usually to avoid an evil,
but in most cases the evil is far more advanced.”

I was looking over my Books of 2016 (on Goodreads), and so many thoughts started going through my mind – “Ooo… I really liked that book, why didn’t I continue with the series?”“OMG – that was on my MUST READ list – WTF?! Why haven’t I read it yet?”“Shit, I promised so and so that I’d read that book s/he really loved…” (or some other version of a “OMG YUS!! I can’t wait to never read that!” promise), and 42 other questions that are tripping over themselves trying to be the first in line for some brain time.

So… In MY case, what is the main reason that so many books get neglected?
I think I waste so much precious reading time because I feel guilty if I stop reading a book as soon as I realize it’s boring AF, and/or I hate it! “I’ll give it a few more pages/chapters.” “Well, I might as well finish it now.”  And, there is also that little FOMO twinge I get right before I shelf/window a book. You know what I mean –“What if it gets really good just after the point where I stop reading?!” Then I usually continue to bore myself, and hate what I’m reading even more.

This year I say “NO MORE!”    My motto for 2017 ~ “Just ‘SHELF IT’!”

2017 Resolution ~ “Actually, no, I didn’t read that.” ::beams, pats self on back::

This year I am going to make a solid effort to put down any book that I’m not invested in by a certain point – TBD on a book by book basis.
I will [try to] not force myself to finish ANY book, under ANY circumstances [if I don’t want to].
I realize that life is too short, and my TBR list is too long to endure the pain of just getting to the back cover.
* You know that I will NOT shelf/window any book just because of this blog post. Every book will have different considerations, I’m sure.  If I’m feelin’ it just because I dig the author’s choice of font – I’m still feelin’ it.  I have no set of hard and fast rules anywhere in my life!!
And there will be certain exemptions, of course. Like I said in the 5 Signs You’re Reading A Bad Book post – Sometimes the actual story may not be the problem. I’ve picked up unfinished books at a different points in my life only to realize how amazing they truly are – I just wasn’t ready for them the first time.

I’m curious about what YOU do in a ‘bad book’ situation!
Check out the 5 SIGNS YOU’RE READING A BAD BOOK post, and answer the poll at the end – You’ve reached the 100 page mark of your new book when you realize that you’re never going to ‘feel it’. What do you do?’

Shadow Girl has read 158 of her 125 book goal in 2016 / 33 books ahead of schedule.

My last challenge update was on Septembember 28. At that time I was sitting at about 128 books read of my 125 book goal. Today I’m showing 158, but I have a few reviews that I need to catch up on. OH – on that note… If I post a review in 2017 on a book that I read in 2016 – I keep the correct dates Goodreads lists / challenges. Example? Sure! I just read SAN DIEGO HORROR PROFESSIONALS: HOLIDAY SPECIALSLAY BELLES, and HALFWAY HOUSE. If – for whatever reason – I don’t get reviews posted until after January 1st, my date read/finished will still reflect 2016.

PINES (Wayward Pines #1) by Blake Crouch

Published January 20, 2015 by Shadow Girl

When I started reading this one thinking it was a different book. I think I meant to pick the Andrew Thomas series – (I wanted to read more about Luther, from SERIAL, and BIRDS OF PREY), but chose this instead. I remembered the synopsis totally different than what is posted on Amazon, and Goodreads.

I’m happy I did, Wayward Pines is one messed up little town!

PINEScover

He notices that it’s a gorgeous day when wakes up outside. OK, that’s weird. He’s In a beautiful park, laying on the greenest grass, next to a crystal clear river – it would be heavenly, if he didn’t feel like he’d been beaten with a bag of bricks.
To his dismay, the pain isn’t the worst of his trouble right now. He can’t remember – anything. He has no wallet, no money, no phone – only a pocket knife, but, it’s not talking.
He knows he needs to get medical attention, but avoids the hospital – he has a gut feeling that that little adventure wouldn’t turn out in his favor. Something is very wrong, he can feel it – before everything goes black again.

The next time he comes to, he’s laying in a hospital bed and feeling a little more like himself. Himself, if he’d been beaten with a bag of bricks.
He remembers that his name is Ethan Burke, he’s a secret service agent, and he’s in Wayward Pines investigating the disappearance of two fellow agents. The hospital staff seems friendly, but a little condescending. He wants to know where all of his belongings are, and he needs to contact his family – but he’s met with vague answers, clearly meant to pacify him. Ethan comes to a realization – ‘I’m a secret service agent, damnit!’ He leaves the hospital and heads directly to the sheriff’s station, and things only get worse. No one has located his ID, and no one believes he is who he claims to be. In fact, he could be in some deep trouble here in Wayward Pines! He needs to figure out what’s really going on here.
His investigation turns up more questions than answers. Each step closer to the truth takes him further from the world he thought he knew, from the man he thought he was, until he must face a horrifying fact — he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.

I’ve only scratched the surface of this story here – there is SO MUCH going on! You won’t believe the secrets that are held in this little Idaho town.
I REALLY loved reading what inspired the author to write this series, and how long he’d actually been working on it! It’s not often that I find another person who was as obsessed with who killed Laura Palmer as I was. Knowing that Blake Crouch was also a Twin Peaks fan of epic proportions made me feel a small connection with him, like we shared a little secret – whispers of coffee and cherry pie…
BUT THEN, I got some news that took some of the wind out of my sails. ::sigh::
I was surprised when I JUST saw that someone has decided to make a TV series out of Wayward Pines. I wasn’t for, or against it. Just surprised. Until…

Freaking directed by M. Night Shyama-lama-dint-dong! What?!
Oh nos!

That’s just me, and I truly hope that I’m wrong.
I hope that the series will do Blake Crouch, and his town, proud. I’ll be watching S1E1 – fingers & toes crossed!

IMDB – M. Night Shyamalan takes on WAYWARD PINES.

THE HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD by Ed Lee

Published July 21, 2014 by Shadow Girl

Written as a sequel to H.P. Lovecraft’s ‘The Haunter of the Dark’, this is Edward Lee’s most pornographic novel to date!

“I’m a sex freak, a deviant, erotomanic paraphiliac. When men rape me and force me to drink their piss – I like it. When they choke me unconscious as they’re fucking me – I cum. An angel? A blessing? I don’t think so!”
~ Hazel Greene

How many fetishes can you name?

I thought I was pretty adept in my knowledge of the perverse, but I learned a thing or two in this book!
‘Mopery’ was a new one to me.
Luckily, I recently found a list of 547 forms of paraphilia, because it came in pretty handy! Is it frightening to know that I’ve used this list three times in the past month – for different books? Eh, whatever!
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER, so – perverted knowledge makes me… powerfully perverted? Smut Smart?

smut

Hazel Greene has every fetish you can think of, and more.
She needs her rape fantasies and water sports, normalcy just isn’t doing it for her. After her boyfriend fucks up his character in their Campus Rapist role-play session – again, they have the end-all of break up fights, with him throwing insults and cutting remarks… things he can’t take back.
Her break up with Ashton comes at the perfect time, though. It leaves her free for a road trip to the middle of nowhere with her bestie. Sonia is very pregnant, and secretly, the love of Hazel’s life.
When Hazel & Sonia reach the cabin, Sonia’s fiancé, Frank, is nowhere to be found. That’s not the only peculiarity –
there is something very wrong with this backwater town. Suicide notes, and magic gems await them at the haunted cabin. Plus the woods are filled with monsters, both human and otherworldly.
The human monsters are easy to deal with at first. Hazel is forced to take part in a psycho redneck hootenanny – filled with depravity fitting of THE BIGHEAD – and she loves it! But her shame rises when the afterglow fades.
It recedes once again when she tries to seduce the man she sought out to help her after her backwoods encounter. Shame, then desire, then mopery, and shame again.
Revolutions.
Meanwhile, Frank is nowhere to be found, and Sonia loses herself while searching for him. And then there are the horrible tentacles . . . Soon Hazel is thrown into a battle for her life that will test her sanity and sex drive.

Haunter

This turned out to be a little different than I’d imagined – in a good way. I guess I was imagining something a little more science-fictiony, but, whether it’s because of the setting, or my lack of knowledge in Lovecraft style writing, I enjoyed the end result.
Of course, you have to know what you’re getting into – be ready for everything to be taken to the next level. Extreme sex, extreme violence, extremely violent sex, everything you enjoy from reading Ed Lee!

GO KILL CRAZY! by Bryan Smith

cover-1-1

Grab your WONDER WOMAN Underoos, and nice big, hot, thick, juicy Itilian sausage – (what? PIZZA!), it’s time to celebrate GRRL POWER!

Pissed off Pin Ups
I want to Go Kill Crazy with Dez, Echo and Lana ❤ These thrill killers are smokin HAWT, and fueled by revenge. Well… revenge, and cocaine.
Sex, drugs, and Smith & Wesson
Goddess help the ones who get in their way, because NOTHING can save the unfortunate people who cross them. No one is safe from these former strippers. By the end of their blood soaked spree, they might not even be safe from each other.

Every time I finish a Bryan Smith story, I remember how much I love his characters! There’s always a little something identifiable in every person, something relatable. The author makes you care what happens to every person. But, don’t forget… caring can go both ways, so while no one is merely a ‘disposable red shirt’, you will care whether or not justice finds [someone like] Mr. Adulterer/Abuser, or Ms. Abuser of Power.

I’m on a Bad Grrl power kick right now, so I need to go scrounge for forgotten change – try to scrape up enough to spend some time with my favorite Bad Grrl, the original Pissed off Pin-UpBryan Smith – Roxy. THE KILLING KIND 2 is available, and I’m dying to find out what she gets up to with Rob, and who are the other serial killers she meets along the way?
Could it possibly be Dez, Echo, and Lana?!
A GKC/KK2 mash/up – tie in?!!
Omg!! How freakin awesome would that be?!

Until next time…

Peace, Love, & Necrophilia
