Rayne Havok’s Birthday Book

LOST SOUL is Available exclusively on Godless

Rayne published Lost Soul on December 31st, (her birthday), so it’s only fitting that since I didn’t get to read it on her birthday, I read it for my birthday! Well, my birthday is tomorrow, so…

A Godless exclusive.

May, drowning in her depression, and desperate for the end, decides that it’s time to let go.

May: “On what was supposed to be my last day alive, I finally found a reason to want to live. But if I wanted to save my soul, I’d have to die for it.”

Synopsis, Godless.com

I feel for May right now, let me tell ya. How heavy everything is in the morning, so hard to move, and already pissed off because you woke up at all. But, for her, a reason to stay sweeps in right before the final credits roll. Did it though? Is there time for her to face her demons before the screen fades to black? That’s what you’re going to find out when you scoop up your copy of LOST SOUL @ Godless.com.

Yay!

This is a really great story, and a side of Rayne I’ve never read before. I’m not surprised – not at all. I’m excited to see what else may be hiding under all that blood, viscera, and revenge. She does have a little something to say for everyone who reads it though…

‘For first time readers, please know that this is not my normal genre of writing and read the others with caution.’

Rayne Havok
(Super Depressed is like regular depressed, but I get to wear this nifty cape.)

Until next time boys & girls …

Jon Athan’s 50th Novel!

THE GIRL IN THE ATTIC

Jon Athan, the illustrious author of The Abuse of Ashley Collins and Grandfather’s House, brings you his 50th novel with this story of family and tragedy, discipline and abuse, and good deeds and bad consequences.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

After tragedy strikes their home, Frederick Chandler—a stern, irritable, violent widower—pulls his teenage daughter, Sydney, out of school and locks her in his attic. He justifies his actions by claiming he’s protecting her from a cruel world while homeschooling her. But when a new neighbor moves into the house next door and their teenage son, Seth, interferes with his plans, Frederick begins to tighten his grip on Sydney—and Sydney starts fighting back. Discipline and homeschooling quickly turn into abuse and lessons of violence. Can Sydney survive her father’s wrath? Can Seth rescue her before it’s too late?

Amazon Product Description

Wow. Just… wow.

Jon Athan celebrates the release of his 50th novel with his bleakest story to date. I just wanted to shower and go to bed with my teddy bear. There are places where I just wanted to scream at the father, and times I broke down in tears for all Sydney has endured. The abuse is coming from every direction, and this twisted man who is her father finds ways to justify everything he is doing to his own flesh and blood. And once justified, the next step is so much easier to take, so it just gets worse, and worse.

And that’s just the first part of the story – minus an agonizing, gut-wrenching part that hasn’t been spoken of, so no spoilers here. Can Sydney’s salvation come from a teenage boy? Did you read Jeff Strand’s Autumn Bleeds to Winter? That gave me more faith to put into the teenage hero angle, so yeah, I can see that. But Jon Athan keeps things more true to life with the cluster fuck of events that follow here, every bad decision stacking up like a horrific Jenga. Watch out, because when those blocks come tumbling down, you still won’t be prepared.

Oh wouldja look at that! My formatting has turned out to be the author’s initials!

Grab your copy of THE GIRL IN THE ATTIC from Amazon, and don’t forget to leave a review at your favorite place (s) to leave reviews at!

Still Celebrating

Dontcha just LOVE that ReFace app?! Additional edits done in PicsArt.

Fun Fact!! I can add Rosie the Riveter to the official Michigan Madmen list! Awesome!

The true identity of Rosie the Riveter has been the subject of considerable debate. For years, the inspiration for the woman in the Westinghouse poster was believed to be Geraldine Hoff Doyle of Michigan, who worked in a Navy machine shop during World War II. Other sources claim that Rosie was actually Rose Will Monroe, who worked as a riveter at the Willow Run Bomber Plant near Detroit. Monroe also was featured in a promotional film for war bonds. Either way, I think we can claim her. YES WE CAN!

#IWD2021 – What Are You Reading?

Or, I guess what I really mean is WHO are you reading? It’s INTERNAL WOMAN’S DAY, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Women are killin’ it in extreme horror these days, too! They’ve always been there, but they’ve been gaining ground and shaking things up in the Boy’s Club. I don’t think there’s an official count anywhere, but if there was, I’d bet that the winner’s of the 2020 SplatterDome¹ wore heels.

‘CANDY GIRL’ by Tina Enos

I’m going to be celebrating #IWD2021 by reading one of BBB’s favorite authors, while wearing my favorite pair of CFM pumps, and red lipstick. Sam West, aka Collette Metcalf, just published Langdon Manor: An Extreme Horror Novella in January, and has Tales From The Edge Of The Sea: An Extreme Horror Collection Within A Wraparound Story (available for pre-order), being published this week! (fingers crossed that it’s all based in Broadgate!!! I’m so excited!!!) Sam West has been a name synonymous with splatterpunk for the better part of a decade (you go, Glen Coco!), but she’s also publishing psychological thrillers under the name Collette Heather! KICKING ASS AND TAKING NAMES! There is so much I could say about paving the way, and opening doors, but I’ll save it for another Coffee Talk and just say that she deserves to be read on IWD! (besides if I wait any longer to read this I might die! Or develop a tick of some kind…)

A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. So let’s all choose to challenge. How will you help forge a gender equal world?
Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.

#IWD2021

Rayne Havok is another name you should recognize. KILLSTREME is the perfect Splatterpunk IWD read, the Girl Power / Sisterhood vibe is strong, and you might feel a little empowered after reading it. Or, you might puke. Either way…

‘BINGO NIGHT’ by Tina Enos

If you’re a regular here, Sea Caummisar’s name should sound very familiar. I don’t know if it was luck, or fate, but I stumbled upon her very first book when it was still the only book, and we’ve been buds ever since. I’m a few reviews behind though, and need to remedy that shit with a quickness!! I just finished Dr. Circumcision, Quack MD, and that was… uncomfortable, to say the very least. Plus, I can’t wait till you hear about My #2 Fan 😱, (available to pre-order now!), and the Sanger Entertainment series is turning out to be a much more than I ever dreamed of!! I’m still astonished at how fast and hard she hit the scene, and made a name for herself. She shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, either. A Splatterpunk IWD could not be had without her – grab a book and celebrate!

‘BABY PLEASE’ by Tina Enos

There are so many women in Extreme Horror / Splatterpunk these days, so this could be the perfect excuse for you to read someone new. Check out someone above if you haven’t already, or try (in no particular order) Nikki Noir, Monica O’Rourke, DJ Doyle, Allisha McAdoo, Sian Rosé, Christine Morgan, … Ok, I do have things to get done today, and a pantsless Zoom appointment at 3:00. But these should get you started! (If I have brain constipation, and forgot to mention you, please don’t take it personally! I either saved your name for Women In Not So Extreme Horror, another sub-genre like Horrotica, you don’t identity as female anymore, or simply just forgot with no malicious intent. Still friends?)

✒️ AUTHOR CONNECTION 🖋️

I’m still working on the Author Connect pages… waaayy more involved than my initial thoughts, but turning out beautiful so far. Until the official Author Connection goes live, were posting old school …

Sam West / Collette Metcalf: Facebook, Amazon, Goodreads, as Collette Heather on Amazon. You can email her here.

Sea Caummisar: Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Goodreads, and you can email her here.

Rayne Havok: Amazon, Goodreads, Twitter, and email here.

Goodreads pages for Nikki Noir, Monica O’Rourke, D.J. Doyle, Allisha McAdoo, Sian Rosé, Christine Morgan.

¹ No matter how badly I wish it WAS a thing, the SplatterDome is sadly not a thing. It COULD BE, though! Who wants to publish the Girls vs. Boys anthology?! K. Trapp Jones, this has your name all over it! (I’d just like my name in small print in the book somewhere… I’m kidding!! But this idea DOES kick ass in stilleto heels 👠 I’m going to send a copy of this to The Splatter Club and see if anyone else agrees!)

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the 308th birthday of lexicographer Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson created the first great English dictionary.

Johnson was a poet, essayist, critic, biographer, an editor, and most importantly (today anyway) – a lexicographer.
His 1755 dictionary was the first truly comprehensive dictionary of the language, and remained the gold standard until The Oxford English Dictionary of 1884 — but one of the best reasons to remember him is – dude was hilarious!

Some of Johnson’s entries are still a complete crack-up. In fact, he was so funny that his buddy Boswell spent 22 years basically just following him around, filling 18 volumes with his various ‘Samuelisms’, creating The Life of Samuel Johnson.
Samuel Johnson was so funny that the only person in the English language who’s quoted more often is Shakespeare.

51emrcr12nl-_sx324_bo1204203200_
To celebrate our fellow lover of lexicology, let’s giggle with some of Johnson’s most notable & quotable dictionary entries –

Lexicographer: A writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the signification of words.

Cough: A convulsion of the lungs, vellicated by some sharp serosity.

Distiller: One who makes and sells pernicious and inflammatory spirits.

Dull: Not exhilaterating (sic); not delightful; as, to make dictionaries isdull work.

Excise: A hateful tax levied upon commodities, and adjudged not by the common judges of property, but wretches hired by those to whom excise is paid.

Far-fetch: A deep stratagem. A ludicrous word.

Jobbernowl: Loggerhead; blockhead.

Kickshaw: A dish so changed by the cookery that it can scarcely be known.

Network: Any thing reticulated or decussated, at equal distances, with interstices between the intersections. (See how he defined ‘reticulated,’ below.)

Oats: A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland appears to support the people.

Pastern: The knee of a horse. (This is wrong. When Johnson was once asked how he came to make such a mistake, Boswell tells us he replied,“Ignorance, Madam, pure ignorance.”)

Patron: One who countenances, supports or protects. Commonly a wretch who supports with insolence, and is paid with flattery.

Pension: An allowance made to any one without an equivalent. In England it is generally understood to mean pay given to a state hireling for treason to his country.

Politician: 1. One versed in the arts of government; one skilled in politicks. 2. A man of artifice; one of deep contrivance.

Reticulated: Made of network; formed with interstitial vacuities.

Tory: One who adheres to the ancient constitution of the state, and the apostolical hierarchy of the church of England, opposed to a Whig.

Whig: The name of a faction.

To worm: To deprive a dog of something, nobody knows what, under his tongue, which is said to prevent him, nobody knows why, from running mad.

“It is commonly observed, that when two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather; they are in haste to tell each other, what each must already know, that it is hot or cold, bright or cloudy, windy or calm.”The Idler

“I have, all my life long, been lying till noon; yet I tell all young men, and tell them with great sincerity, that nobody who does not rise early will ever do any good.”The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides

“At the tea table he had considerable demands upon his favorite beverage, and I remember when Sir Joshua Reynolds at my house reminded him that he had drank eleven cups, he replied — ‘Sir, I did not count your glasses of wine, why should you number up my cups of tea?’” —The Life of Samuel Johnson, Vol. 2

“It can scarcely be candid not to make a previous declaration, that he is to expect little justice from the author of this extract, a hardened and shameless tea-drinker.”A Journal of Eight Days’ Journey

How well do you think you know Samuel Johnson’s dictionary?

Take this hilarious quiz to find out!
