*A story that made this reviewer get a little emotional, and this discussion a little squishy. Don’t get used to it.

The Darkest of Fiction

This isn’t the extreme horror of Shaun’s that we’ve discussed in the past, but it is ‘the darkest of fiction’. Taken from the introduction: “The monster in this story is not some creature hiding in your closet or a thug in an alleyway with a knife. It’s something everyone can and probably has struggled with. Some writers would stay away from this topic to protect their readers. I won’t do that. The subject matter is meant to make you uncomfortable. If it makes you angry, good. If it makes you cry, good. I hope my words use your emotions as paints and splash them across a black canvas. And no. I did not mean ‘blank.’”
Felo De Se is just what his profile promises – ‘a story that will tug at your heartstrings one moment and the next, shake you to your very core, sending you on an emotional rollercoaster into the darkest corners of your imagination.’

When his life went down a dark path and was too much for him to handle, Jeremy Price took the only option he thought he had left. Jeremy ended his life and now his family and friends have to deal with the aftermath. Only Jeremy will be there with them as well.

This is not the end of Jeremy Price.
His spirit will not move on to any sort of afterlife. He must wander his hometown, watching those who cared for him. His wife and two kids. A friend. His father. A childhood acquaintance. They all ask themselves why Jeremy did what he did, trying to solve a puzzle no one really wants to solve and one, Jeremy might not even have the answer to.

This story is tearing me up inside, and I keep imagining how Shaun had to feel while researching, and writing, (or dealing with personally). It’s a hard subject to talk about from every angle.  Quoted from story:  ‘It’s impossible to describe and even harder to survive.’.  My dad said something once that really stuck with me, “Suicide is contagious”.  Sadly, it’s true.

I realize that Jeremy Price is a fictional character, but I really wish I’d known him.

Every story within these pages seems to reach out and touch me on a very personal level, (if it isn’t something specific in my own life, it is specific in someone’s life very close to me.) Every one.
Each character could be me, or someone near and dear to my heart.
The six bonus stories included here are no exception. (We’ll sort through the extreme horror characters later, but I’m sure we’ll find ourselves in there somewhere, too.)
I can’t seem to articulate all the emotions I’m experiencing today after all the feels, but no matter what the future holds, TODAY… I want to be a better person.

Bonus Content includes six short stories:
Jon’s Cabin: Touching, and inspirational – the power of love is limitless.
Fly Me Home: Oh my Dog. You know that one country song that you can’t listen to because you instantly turn into a snotty and blubbery mess? Multiply that song times 10.
The Bench: A lifetime of thoughts can pass in a matter of moments.
An entire life can be changed, and damaged even quicker.
I Try My Best: What a roller coaster. I know Ashley’s mom.
A Different Kind of Love Story: This is a truly amazing story.
I’m afraid to blink because I’ll ruin my eye make-up, but my heart is full of warm fuzzies from this Different Kind of Love Story.
Poor Man’s Coat:  ‘People do not value what is truly priceless.’ Outstanding story! I’m running out of ways to tell you how much I’ve changed today.

P.S. I caught that shout out to William Malmborg 👍 Always a classy move.

Maniacs with Knives: Unapologetic Horror from Shaun Hupp

Published May 4, 2017 by Shadow Girl

To a regular person, they’re just tools. . .
A chef uses them to prepare a meal.
A surgeon uses them to save lives.
To the maniacs in this story, however. . .
Theirs is a much darker purpose.
For them, the first cut is NOT the deepest. It’s just the beginning. . .

* Maniacs With Knives – A Snuff Art House Publication *

This is Book 1 in the Maniacs with Knives Series, from #MichiganMadman Shaun Hupp’s Unapologetic Horror Line.
The author is NOT sorry this book contains: Gore, violence, dismemberment, rape, swearing, and a dozen other things you wouldn’t want your grandmother to talk about at her Sunday church group. If you’re a sensitive reader, this book is probably NOT for you.

IT’S TIME TO MEET YOUR MAIN MANIACS!

Jen & Troy – Jen’s parents are out of town, and she just wants to have a little fun with her boyfriend, Troy.  She hears noises and thinks that Troy, being the wonderful boyfriend that he is, has snuck inside while she was in the shower to fulfill one of her kinkier fantasies.  She finally finds him, but realizes that something is wrong when he turns around… Troy wouldn’t be wearing her dad’s face as a mask. Oh shit!

“Guys that wear other peoples faces don’t get scared.”

Kim & Rich have been married for 5 years. She loves him, and he beats her. But he always says he’s sorry, so it’s OK (I just rolled my eyes so hard I saw my brain).  The past couple of days have been especially bad, though – so Kim ruining tonight’s dinner was the straw that broke Rich’s back.  What happened next was just a simple accident – one that could have been avoided if they had any ketchup in the house.

Alex & Owen begin as strangers in a bar, drinking & telling stories. The tales get taller as they tend to do when alcohol is involved, so can we believe Owen when he confesses that he’s the infamous Bay River Slasher – the most prolific serial killer to never get caught? Probably, because the ‘Holy Shit’ moment comes when Alex finally tells Owen who HE really is.

Ben & Erin are my absolute favorite characters! ‘Ben’ – The Artist, and Erin – The Masterpiece.  ‘Ben’ has been reading too many books by Matt Shaw, and wants to be Art when he grows up. Erin just wants these things taken off of her face!

Loc 645 / 32% Erin is forced to look in the mirror after her first session with The Artist. She has her eight fingers and two thumbs sewn onto her face – read the story for more details.

“Erin nodded slowly, trying not to shake the fingers sewed to her face like she had done earlier.”

Aannddd… this is what I pictured…

Each story continues as the book progresses, meshing together here and there, and proving to be one of my main sources of hilarity so far this year! ESPECIALLY ‘Ben’ & Erin’s parts. I have FIVE highlights showing where I busted out laughing, and exactly what I was thinking as I tried not to pee my pants, (see gifs above for an example).  (The tool shown is a costotome, something The Artist likes to use when he’s feeling creative. I needed to see it, so I thought you’d enjoy it, too.)  I don’t want to spoil all the fun, so I’ll refrain from sharing all my twisted, and hilarious thoughts. Just promise me one thing… when you’re reading this book and you get to Loc 1443, play ‘BOING!’ sound effect.  Then finish up and come back here so we can chat and giggle!

Peace, Love & Necrophilia

Jim has a very special surprise in store for his wife Kristen.
Tomorrow is their anniversary, and he wants to make sure she has an evening that she will never forget.  Something tells me that it’s a night that neither of them will ever forget – no matter how hard they try.

I’m really lovin’ everything that’s been coming out of Dark Chapter Press – (‘the killer publisher for readers who demand more – more scares, more gore and ultimately, more horror!’).  From what I’ve read so far, Dark Chapter Press and it’s authors are not just pushing out the same old horror.  Books A and B in The Dark Chapter Press A-Z series caught me off guard! I read a lot of horror, and I can usually see what is coming a mile away – but these two both smacked me in the head, laughed, and said “not today, sister!” (Watch here for the reviews for the KIDS anthology, and a couple others – I’ll be posting soon!)

I Try My Best: A Mother's TaleI Try My Best: A Mother’s Tale by Shaun Hupp
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I TRY MY BEST is a heartbreaking short story from one of my favorite Michigan Madmen, Shaun Hupp.
Raising a child as a single parent is never easy.
Being the single parent of a special needs child can be even more difficult, but it’s better than being married to someone who refers to his own daughter as a burden, and uses her as an excuse to walk away from the family he vowed to love and protect – till death do us part.
Ashley’s mom tries her best.
Sure, she gets overwhelmed sometimes. Yes, she is tired, and yes, she struggles. But, she tries her best.
Maybe if she tries hard enough… maybe if she is nothing short of perfect… just maybe that day will come when Ashley is returned to her. Maybe Ashley will come back.

This book also includes a preview for Shaun’s new release JON’S CABIN.

The Worst Kind of Monster: A Short Horror Story powerful & thought provoking short story by Shaun Hupp.

I thought I knew where the story was heading – but I was caught off guard!
I really hope that the author will revisit Dustin one day – introduce us to him as an adult, and touch on the nature vs. nurture battle that will be raging within him.

XXX by Rayne Havok

Published May 19, 2017 by Shadow Girl

Xavier: “I escaped from prison, hauling ass in a stolen car, putting space between me and that barbed wire fence- when the damn thing runs out of gas.

Luckily, I come across an old farmhouse that looks empty, even luckier, it is not.
The threats about daddy coming home don’t scare me… maybe they should have.”

Yeah, Xavier… maybe they should have!!

‘XXX’ is my first book by Rayne Havok, (what a kick-ass name!). I hate to say this, but I don’t think I’d heard of her until I read Shaun Hupp’s Maniacs with Knives last week. Her blurb for Shaun was so awesome that I had to meme* it for the book’s review! Last night, as I was frantically trying to find out what happened to Tim Miller’s newest release (Snuff Film – it was missing from Amazon last night – boo!!)  (UPDATE: I JUST read that Snuff Film is banned from Amazon – is there any better advertising than that?! I compare it to the recommendation, ahem – I mean warning labels on Rx bottles.) , and I saw on Goodreads that Tim is currently reading her books. (Our circles definitely overlap. I don’t know why I haven’t read this until now.) I recognized a few other names in the reviews, too, but I was already sold. At that point I was just trying to figure out which book I wanted to read first.

Back to the story!

Like most of her books, XXX is a short story, (appx 67 pgs), so when I first started reading I thought I was in for a story that I’ve read dozens of times already… ‘escaped prisoner on the run terrorizes family in secluded house in BFE…’ . That is NOT a bad thing! I like those stories and was looking forward to seeing how this author spun it. But I was WRONG! Holy shit, what a ride. It was hard to read at a couple points – “TORTURE: NEW AND IMPROVED!! Now, with sprinkles!”
When I was about 3/4 into the story, Rayne snuck** up behind me and whacked me in the back of the head with it! It’s a great, twisty ending – and… one that I didn’t see coming.
I’m looking forward to reading her other books. I trying to decide which one to read next – I think it’s going to be either The Embalmer, or Degenerate. Keep your eyes peeled… there’ll be more reviews to come!

Birthday Boy by Cory Cline

I wanted to keep with today’s theme, so since it’s my birthday I decided to read

“Piñata!”

“Chaz is the type of guy who thinks he will do anything to get laid. His limits are about to be put to the test when he wakes up in “Boy’s” barn.

He is the guest of honor at a special party that “Boy” and his family hold dear to the heart.
Some tradition’s never get old…”

Like Chaz, I, too,¹ have woken up the 6th of January with hazy, Polaroid memories, wondering – “where am I?”, “where are my pants?”, and most importantly… “where is that cat that shit in my mouth?”  I’m happy to say that the answers that slowly come to me after a fun filled night of Jäger Bombs are nowhere near as horrifying as Chaz’s!

If this doesn't scare the Hell out of you...

If this doesn’t scare the Hell out of you…

I was about to add another one of Cory Cline’s books to my Amazon TBR list, AS SEEN ON TV , and BAM – “You purchased this item on November 28, 2015.” Nice!  I remember seeing the book, because it’s the same title as my book/ss – (the one that might never see the light of day).  I HAVE to read it now… what if we had the exact same idea?! 😮 hahaha!! No… the synopsis is below, silly.  (I have it loaded up and ready to go, so watch for it!)

Ravenous: Car Nex Collection Book One

Published August 20, 2015 by Shadow Girl

The Car Nex.

Weapons will not slow it. Prayers will not stop it.

It is coming. And it hungers…

Five authors put their horrific spin on the Car Nex (Carnivore from the Nexus), Terry M. West’s wicked and unstoppable creation. If you are a fan of gory creature feature tales, get your monster on with this thrill packed collection of old school horror! This volume features the first wave of Car Nex tales by Terry M. West, ER Robin Dover, Joseph Ramshaw, Kerry EB Black, and Shaun Hupp

CAR NEX: The Original by Terry M. West

The Campbell Homestead Massacre happened on September 29th, 1965 in Pleasant Storm, Texas. Adam Campbell apparently never watched horror movies like The Evil Dead, or The Gate. If he had watched some 80’s horror flicks, he would have known NOT to read aloud from any ancient tomes, and 28 residents of Pleasant Storm wouldn’t have been hacked to pieces.

CAR NEX: The Evil One by ER Robin Dover

Aldo Capello, the mayor of New York summons the Car Nex to destroy an underground terrorist group, and restore peace to the city. He realizes too late that the cost of peace is paid by the spilling of blood. New York is about to become Meat City.

CAR NEX: The Mighty and the Merciless by Joseph Ramshaw

I wasn’t sure if there was a place for me in this world. Everything else was the same, but I… I was different.  ~ Joseph Ramshaw

The Mighty and the Merciless takes on the Car Nex with a sci-fi twist. It also brings a promise from Joseph Ramshaw – THE FACE-PUNCHERS WILL RETURN!  Don’t go breakin’ our hearts, Joe!

CAR NEX: Storm by Kerry EB Black

Mariah Dawn is in Texas writing an anniversary piece on the Campbell Homestead Massacre for ‘Haunting Texas Landmarks’.  During a bit of ‘urban exploring’, (read: trespassing), she uncovers evidence that might bring the terror of the Car Nex back to Pleasant Storm.

CAR NEX: Trailer Park by Shaun Hupp

David Morgan lived in Pleasant Place Trailer Park with his family until he discovered that his wife was having an affair. She took their daughter and moved to the newer section of Pleasant Places, while David got displaced to the outskirts of the oldest section.

Angry, drunk, and bitter – David summons the Car Nex to take revenge on his ex-wife, and anything else that gets in it’s way.

Bonus points to Shaun Hupp, a fellow Michigan madman, for the Gary Hack tribute, and the BLOODY CARNIVORES nod!
