GENITAL GRINDER by Ryan Harding

Published March 30, 2015 by Shadow Girl

Think you’re hardcore? Think again.
I thought I was HARDER than hardcore, and… I didn’t handle this as easily as I believed I would. (That’s evident by the amount of time that passed between my first reading and this post!)

My showers are never hot enough any more.
The backs of my eyeballs itch.
I think I caught something, a VVD¹.

Enjoy the tour, friends. Enjoy the gang-bang. You may need psych drugs afterwards, you may need an air-sick bag and a steam shower, but I feel confident that you will be provocatively moved by this book.”
~ Edward Lee, from his introduction

The Stories –

Bottom Feeder:
Hitting the bar right before last call isn’t the most opportune time to pick up a super-model. The best this guy could snag tonight was a blonde with a very slow metabolism. Her slow metabolism might have been a contributing factor to what happened at about 3:36 am, but that’s not even close to being the worst part of the night.

Damaged Goods:
Von & Greg can’t believe their luck when they come across their favorite porn star look-alike on the side of the road. The little part about her already being dead was not of any concern to these guys. There are a couple of moments when you might think one brother is sicker than the other, but let me assure you – that’s not the truth.
Yeah… this is the first of the gag-inducing stories, but if you have a weak stomach you probably wouldn’t be interested in this book or checking out this review!

Sharing Needles:
‘The Slave Killer’ claimed the lives of between four [confirmed] and eighteen [unconfirmed] women before disappearing. Twenty-five years later, the murders have started again. Is ‘The Bartok Butcher’ mimicking the brutal killings, or has ‘The Slave Killer’ returned to finish what he started?
There’s a hidden journal with ALL of the answers written inside, but will the right person find it before it’s too late? It depends on who you’re rooting for. In the end, I’m sure that the right person walked away.

Genital Grinder: A Snuff Act in 5 Acts:
Von & Greg are together again, and this time it’s not just for a bit of necrophiliac debauchery. No sir. This time is for fun & profit. The boys are going to lay the Urban Legend to rest and produce the world’s first sanctioned snuff film – ‘Genital Grinder’.
They’ve acquired THE Geisha Hammond, (the mouth-fuckable news anchor who’s lived through the previous stories), and the REAL Lolita Ream, (the look-alike having been used for the above mentioned necrophiliac debauchery in DAMAGED GOODS). These two women will be the stars of Von & Greg’s first film.
WARNING: It’s not just all about the blood, and the gore. This one almost made me puke.
Seriously.

Development:
A lot of people don’t realize that when you take your film in to be developed – the person who is developing it actually sees your photos. There are others who do realize, but just don’t care.
Alex is one of the faceless individuals that develops film, and believe me when I tell you that he is looking at the photos. He has even started printing off extra copies for his own personal collection.
When he recognizes some missing girls in a set of photos, he decides to pay the customer a visit – and it’s not because he’s a good Samaritan.

Emissary:
The ‘Taste Of Death’ videos are labeled as ‘shockumentaries‘, and advertise real deaths caught on tape. Clips of accidents, murders, and animal attacks are collected and pieced together to form 90 minute videos.
‘Taste Of Death 9: Grave Matters’ is about to be released, and Gabriel could hardly wait. He’d watched each of the first eight videos at least three times. When he thinks he recognizes the ‘shotgun to the face’ guy standing on a street corner, alive and with 100% of his skull, he feels totally betrayed. After a bit of research, and some amature investigation, Gabriel is sure he has figured out what is going on.
Then he sees ‘TOD9’ and realizes just how wrong he is.

Genital Grinder II: Dis-Membered:
We get to finish off this thrill ride with a little bit more of Von & Greg’s nauseating shenanigans! These two are bound & determined to become millionaires, and since their little snuff film didn’t pan out quite right – it’s back to the drawing board. They decide to dive headfirst into the oh-so lucrative business of penis-napping, but without a lick of common sense between them… well, becoming millionaires STILL may not be as easy as they thought.

Let me wrap this up by throwing in a few final thoughts –
Up until now, the only other work I’ve read by Ryan Harding was in Sixty-Five Stirrup Iron Road, so I don’t have a lot of back material to go on, (but, we know that Sixty-Five Stirrup Iron Road DID have some fun & nauseating moments for me). I think that Genital Grinder wins the trophy for being the most difficult book I’ve ever read. Reading it this second time (to help write the review) wasn’t any easier. BUT – underneath the buckets of blood, vomit, and bodily fluids, these are really great stories. If you don’t think you have the stomach to even attempt the worst, then start off by reading the shorts without Von & Greg. Start with DEVELOPMENT, and SHARING NEEDLES – they’re outstanding stories, and well worth the price of the book.
I love how certain characters, (like news anchor Geisha Hammond), are referenced in almost every story, along with the other little nods & winks (the Gaping Anus video being my favorite tie-in >.< ) that bond them all together.

Have you already read GG? Leave me some comments! Let me know your thoughts on the book and/or the author – good or bad. I’m very curious to hear other opinions.

I’ll definately be looking into more work from this author, The Detained is on my Must Read list now (I remember getting BODY ART, and I need to get it in que!) I had to giggle a bit when I read the author bio and learned what Kristopher Triana does for a living, when he’s not writing that is. I have two more books on my Must Read list now, too! 🗜️

* A PERSONAL NOTE TO KRISTOPHER TRIANA:
I’d be very excited to see the New & Improved Emma taken further. Her recently acquired ‘treasure’ is a story begging to be told as well!

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: Sam West

Published June 30, 2017 by Shadow Girl

Extreme Horror fans are familiar with the name, and hardcore works of  Sam West. But, very few fans know much about the person behind the author’s photo on the back cover.  That’s all about to change!
Sam’s philosophy is that horror should be sick and sexy.  From Meet the Meat to The Dark Side of Red, this author has proven time and time again that it’s a theory that works.

His For The Keeping Meet The Meat: An Extreme Horror Short The Green Fog: An Extreme Horror Novella Dreamworld: Extreme Horror Home Intruder 2: Born This Way: An Extreme Horror Novel Two Minds: An Extreme Horror Novel Victim: An Extreme Horror Novel Snuff Club: An Extreme Horror Novel School Reunion: An Extreme Horror Novella
Splatterpunks: An Extreme Horror Novel Mary Blake: A Nasty Novelette  Bad House Dead Dot Com Suffer Hard: An Extreme Horror Novella Home Intruder: An Extreme Horror Novella Flesh Factory: An Extreme Horror Novel Djinn: An Extreme Horror Novel

With the extreme horror genre is in the spotlight now that Amazon has started their modern day book burning and censorship of all indie horror. It’s the perfect time to chat with the ‘Queen of the Extreme’.  Yeah, you read that right.

Ladies & Gentlemen… Meet Sam West

Hi Collette!! ::huggs::  The only way to begin this is with your big news! You’re officially ‘out’ as Collette Metcalf, the sick & sexy heart & soul of your nom de plume – Mr. Sam West.

Why did you ‘come out’ as a woman, and why did you feel the need to pretend to be a man in the beginning?

Extreme horror is a male dominated niche. With a few notable exceptions, female extreme horror writers are pretty thin on the ground.  I wanted to be known as an ‘extreme horror author’, not a ‘female, extreme horror author’. I wanted to be judged on my writing alone, not my gender. It seems to  me that women horror writers, no matter how talented they are, are still defined as such. We are not  women writers, we are just writers.
* Plus my husband has a WAY prettier face than me.

My reading habits prompted Amazon to suggest your books to me, and Cathy H. was right when she told me that I’d like your work. I think I’ve finally read every one of your books, and I have to ask…
Is there anything TOO TABOO for you to write about?

Yes. All joking aside, child cruelty. Even I have my hard limits. Although many brilliant authors have tackled such a harrowing subject with grace and compassion, I feel my writing style is entirely inappropriate for such a delicate subject. Like the best kind of horror movies, I write to entertain, with my (metaphorical) balls to the wall. I am all about the gore and sex with a side-helping of black humour.
* Thankfully most authors I read think the way that you do.  But, FFS – Even Ed Lee skims over those scenes! (The Backwoods).

Let’s do one more semi-serious question before we start acting like ourselves…
Do you read your reviews?
I try not to, but yeah, I do.
The secret of this game is not to let praise go to your head, or criticism get you down. I’m all for constructive criticism, but I’ve had one-star reviews calling me a woman-hater and a God-lover. Which is pretty cool, considering I’m a feminist and an atheist. And a bird, obviously.

As an adult, have you ever read a book that legit scared you?
The only horror novel (or novella) to ever truly creep me out, is ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.’ I love a bit of gore, but this story has none and disturbed me on the most base level. The descriptions of Mr. Hyde, the subtlety of it, genuinely makes my flesh creep. It I had nuts, I’d give my left one to write like that.

Your book, SUFFER HARD, is being adapted to a movie…
Who would your ideal actors be to play those characters?
Who would you want to NEVER see as one of your characters?
Which actors would actually GET the job?
(you know… totally wrong for the part, but the director didn’t ask you…)

To play the four friends on the clifftop hike, about to have the pub lunch in the boozer from hell, I would like to cast four of the most irritating actors and popstars going. I think I would choose Justin Beiber, Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus and Kylie Jenner… Then I would slaughter them in the most vile of ways. But I wouldn’t be able to afford those guys so I’d probably have to have some washed-up actors in their 70s playing teenagers. (*Now all I can picture is ‘The Breakfast Club’ Brat Pack!)

What is your main character’s favorite color? Don’t act like you don’t know
I never thought to ask them. I can’t ask them now because I killed them.

Since this is an author interview, let me ask you about your writing process… Do you write naked?  Have you?
All I wear when I write is a smile and Chanel No 5….
Actually, no, that’s a lie. I have a favourite writing and house skirt. I love it so much I can wear it for weeks at a time and only take it off when my family starts vomiting with the smell of it.

Do you have any phobias?
Flies. I have a big problem with flies. I mean, how dare they puke up on my food and then suck it back up again, vomit and all. Jesus, that is so disgusting. And that buzzing, man, even when I’ve killed them, I can still hear them in my brain. And why do they have to pop like a big zit when one squidges them? They are made of acne pus. Urgh.

Have you ever been in trouble with the police?
No. I’m boring like that

The police raid your house, and take your computer for evidence…
Are you going to jail? (*I know I’d be going to jail… sg)
What is the worst / most embarrassing / what is the absolute most fucked up thing we’d find in your computer’s history?
I do a lot of crazy research for my books. The best one was for Gynophagia, that is, the fetish of eating people, be it either consensual or brutally non-consensual.  Oh wow, I had to bleach my eyeballs and wash out my brain after seeing that stuff.

What were you like as a kid?
Spotty.

You have to choose how you’re going to die from one of  YOUR death scenes, which method, (and which title), would you pick?
I don’t suppose I am known for my gentle death scenes. Softly into the night my characters do not go….
Do I have to pick one? Because that would be weird. Oh, okay then, I’ll get raped by a clown who then hangs himself on my intestines. ‘Dead Dot Com’, btw.

Is there a reason that you picked the one that you did?
I dunno. Because I’m ill in the head?
* I don’t think I could have picked one way to die from your stories – you’re freakin’ brutal! (Yeah… it’s a compliment).

What will be written on your tombstone?
“I told you I was sick.”

What is your favorite book quote?

From American Psycho. “I like to dissect girls. Do you know I’m utterly insane?”. Also: “There’s no use denying it, this has been a bad week. I’ve started drinking my own urine.”
* I’ve always loved Patrick Bateman! “My mask of sanity was a victim of  impending slippage.”

How about a movie quote?

I’m one of those geeks that always quotes Tarantino lines … I think I’m really cool and have a good snicker to myself, and my husband, is like, ‘my God, you’re such a saddo…’

Pam: Hey Warren. Who is this guy?
Warren the Bartender: Stuntman Mike.
Pam: And who the hell is Stuntman Mike?
Warren the Bartender: He’s a stuntman.

TV Question! American Dad or Family Guy?
Family Guy. But only because I’ve never heard of the other one.
(O.o) uhhh… must fix that… go HERE for a YouTube “best of” A.D. montage.
Bob’s Burgers or Archer?
Who or what now? I’m British, we only get The Simpsons. Which I think is great, since you ask. (*Awww… I’m sad for you now!  They are both cartoons, and both star H. Jon Benjamin, and you will love Archer!)  Bob’s Burgers montage / Archer montage / Archer S:1 E:1

Do you like waffles?
Don’t know enough about them to form an opinion, really. I’m British; we’re more about the crumpets and marmite. And Devonshire cream-teas.

Ahhh, yes. The Devon / Cornwall War.

What’s the title of your favorite ‘guilty pleasure’ read. And, appx. how many times have you read it?
I don’t know about ‘guilty pleasure’, I’m not ashamed of anything I read over and over, it just means that I think it’s bloody good. I love American Psycho and Orwell’s 1984, for instance. I’ve read them a ton of times.

Have you ever been stalked?
Yes. Because I am so hot.
stalked someone else?
Yes. I am a notorious stalker. Just ask my girlfriends. I stalk them until they give in and say yes to being my friend…

What’s the worst, most mortifying thing you’ve ever done on social media?
Not much. I used to ignore facebook from one week to the next, and posted something every two years at best. But now I’ve tempted fate, I expect some kind soul will post the most humiliating photo or video of my life.

If you have to be remembered for just one sentence, what would it be?

From ‘The Dark Side Of Red’… “The Dark Side Of Red is your own reflection in the mirror across the bar when you fall into the abyss of your own, twisted desires. It is the sickness of the soul. It is death. And it is my life.”
* Okay, so that’s technically 5 sentences. But some of them were short.
** Noticed what I did there? Plugged my new book? I’m such a clever-clogs.

OK – Lightning Round! No thinking, just shout ’em out!  Ready?

Birthday Boy by Cory Cline

Published January 6, 2017 by Shadow Girl

I wanted to keep with today’s theme, so since it’s my birthday I decided to read

BIRTHDAY BOY by Cory Cline

“Piñata!”

“Chaz is the type of guy who thinks he will do anything to get laid. His limits are about to be put to the test when he wakes up in “Boy’s” barn.

He is the guest of honor at a special party that “Boy” and his family hold dear to the heart.
Some tradition’s never get old…”

Like Chaz, I, too,¹ have woken up the 6th of January with hazy, Polaroid memories, wondering – “where am I?”, “where are my pants?”, and most importantly… “where is that cat that shit in my mouth?”  I’m happy to say that the answers that slowly come to me after a fun filled night of Jäger Bombs are nowhere near as horrifying as Chaz’s!

If this doesn't scare the Hell out of you...

If this doesn’t scare the Hell out of you…

...THIS will haunt your dreams forever!

…THIS will haunt your dreams forever!

I was about to add another one of Cory Cline’s books to my Amazon TBR list, AS SEEN ON TV , and BAM – “You purchased this item on November 28, 2015.” Nice!  I remember seeing the book, because it’s the same title as my book/ss – (the one that might never see the light of day).  I HAVE to read it now… what if we had the exact same idea?! 😮 hahaha!! No… the synopsis is below, silly.  (I have it loaded up and ready to go, so watch for it!)

TWO MINDS: 50 Shades Of Fucked Up – An Extreme Horror Novel by Matt Shaw & Sam West

Published December 6, 2016 by Shadow Girl

two-minds

My rating: 4 of 5 stars  ⋆⋆⋆⋆

These two authors are a match made in… well, Heaven for me!
I’ve been a fan of Matt’s for a very long time. When I stumbled across Sam’s work not very long after, the two people who introduced me to Matt said I’d enjoy Sam’s writing as well – (thank you Suzanne and Cathy!) – and they were right.
IMO, Sam West’s stories have been getting increasingly better this year, and this collaboration came at the perfect time for both of them.

“Two Minds” is told through the viewpoint of the two characters living the story.

The woman – convinced the man she is talking to is responsible for her sister’s disappearance – and the man… Who is he? Did he have anything to do with the sudden disappearance of Samantha’s sister or is he nothing more than an innocent bystander?

Only one thing is for sure… After this night, neither of them will be the same again.

I wish the ending were a little… ‘beefier’ (for lack of a better term, or perfect tongue in cheek?).  I just felt like I needed a bit more there, but that’s only one readers opinion.  I love how it was written. It’s a great style, and I bet we’ll see more authors experimenting with it. This story, (plus the little preview I had), has got me even more excited for The Devil’s Guests!! Have you been looking for something a bit more twisted than usual? The Devil’s Guests is gonna do things to you that no book has done before – trust!

A note to the authors… your introduction(s) made me laugh out loud at work. Thank you for helping convince my boss I’m a lunatic for sitting down to read “50 SHADES OF FUCKED UP” on my break, and giggling.

Sixty-Five Stirrup Iron Road

Published July 4, 2014 by Shadow Girl

Near the end of September 2012, Tom Piccirilli went under the knife to have a tennis ball sized tumor removed from his brain (!), and SIXTY FIVE STIRRUP IRON ROAD is what happens when your friends include the Kings of Extreme!
All proceeds from 65SIR go to Tom Piccirilli and his family.
Tom has also been given a nod within the book, lending his name to a rather unhappy loan shark!
I read that Tom had a setback last month, suffering a stroke and another hospital stay. But, I’m happy to say that he is home now, and on the road to recovery!

I’m not entirely sure what happened to my review from the first time I read this. When I realized that it wasn’t on my blog, I pulled it out and started to skim for details – I looked up to see that two hours had passed – I had become another victim of the house! I reread it cover to cover, and I think I enjoyed it even more this time.

cover-2

The house at Sixty-Five Stirrup Iron Road has a history stained by the blood and bodily fluids of every person who ever inhabited it. The house was built in the 1930s by Harold & Lucy Pearson. We’ll find out more about them later in the book. THIS story starts ten years ago… with siblings Nicci & Sam Forrestal.
Sam works as a guard at the county detention center, and Nicci… well, Nicci was just released from said detention center. She had spent 30 days inside for doing the same thing that got her fired from her job at Corn Dog Dee-Lites, (let’s just say that she was about to win the gold in the oral Olympics, but that last ‘judge’ whipped out his badge. The cuffs were NOT fun that time!) Her brother has graciously taken her in until she can get back on her feet.
She accuses him of having ulterior motives when she wakes up sticky, crusty, and has a bad, yet very familiar, taste in her mouth.
This leads to the most disgusting, and gag inducing (no pun intended) prologue ever written.
*Coprophilia, emetophilia, urolagnia, mysophilia, zoophilia, and mucophilia, are some of the highlights included, and these are just a prelude to the violent & bloody end of these appx. 30 pages.
If you made it through this, I think you’ll be ok.
Maybe.
Probably not.
But – don’t wuss out on me!

NoKidsNoStupidAdults
Now, after ten years, Chuck & Arrianne are moving in.
Almost immediately – it begins again. Slowly, at first. But when Arrianne crosses Chuck’s line in the sand, from what’s acceptable kink, to ‘that’s just disgusting’, his thoughts go to denial and blame, and hers go to realizing that it’s the house, and trying to make some sense of it all.
The Diary of Lucy Pearson makes an appearance, and I wish there was more of it. If one of these guys were to publish the entire diary… they’d make a lot of money! (HINT HINT, GUYS!!)
I have to tell you here – I’ve been slowly working on my Library Thing account, so I was paying close attention to places of interest. I made this note, and I’m adding it to show you how brilliant I think I get after not sleeping for extended periods –

Arrianne goes to the Cellar Door pub for a drink and two things stand out:
1 – The pub’s name – Cellar Door.
It may be a nod to Karen Pomeroy / Donnie Darko, it could be used because of it’s phonaesthetics, OR – it’s just a name and I’m looking WAAAAY to deep into things… whatever. I noticed & made a note of it. And, number
2 – The drink she orders is… a WHISKY SOUR 🙂 That has to be on purpose!

The other characters in the story all have their roll to play, and there is a damn good story here. You can feel that the authors had a good time writing this, and their friendship shows – mostly in an annoying sibling kind of way! They name characters and places after each other, and poke fun at each other. By the end, the novelty of lending their fellow author’s names to characters had turned into the names BEING their fellow authors.
By this point, I was about to pee my pants from the absurdities of the deaths, childish bickering between the surviving authors, and a comment to WJW about being the only black man in a horror story – ‘you might have super-powers!’ If that wasn’t hysterical enough, his reply brought tears to my eyes – “There ain’t any magical negroes in an Ed Lee novel”!!
I had to laugh at myself, too. During a particularly disgusting scene I had thrown my left hand up to cover my eyes, but kept reading by peeking through my fingers. Who covers their eyes while reading? I don’t think I’ve ever done that before, but if I had – I’m sure it was while reading the other book I’ve read from Ryan Harding. (I won’t say where in the story that this happened, but, I’ll tell you this – I learned that Ryan is an Eli Roth fan!)
The first time I read this, I had recently finished THE KILLING KIND. I was all warm & fuzzy thinking that Bryan Smith rode off into the bloody sunset with the crazy chick of his dreams. But then, by way of rotation, he wasn’t in the group that wrote the last chapter.

So, the Sixty-Five Million Dollar Question… Will you like it?
I can’t make that call! I did. More so the second time.
I gagged. I was grossed out. But, I also laughed, and I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next.
Even seasoned fans may find certain scenes too disturbing, but will still want to own it for their collection.
But – there’s not one page, not one review, that doesn’t warn the reader about what’s inside Sixty-Five Stirrup Iron Road. Please, don’t read it, then leave a shitty review just because of the content. By all means – be honest about the story! Just remember, it’s all in good fun, and for a good cause. ❤

*While trying to find ‘proper names’ for the acts described, (so I didn't offend anyone too bad), I was stuck under an umbrella term that I found while trying to review THE HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD, (which was also written by Ed Lee). 'Paraphilia: sexual interests in objects, situations, or individuals that are highly atypical.'
That just doesn't cut it for this story.
I was able to find an expanded list! 547 listed forms of paraphilia! Go, me!

Tom Piccirilli is the author of more than twenty-five novels including A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN, SHADOW SEASON, THE COLD SPOT, and THE LAST KIND WORDS. He's a four-time winner of the Stoker Award, two-time winner of the International Thriller Award, and has been nominated for the World Fantasy Award, and twice for the Edgar Award. Marilyn Stasio of The New York Tims Book Review called THE LAST KIND WORDS, "A caustic thriller…the characters have strong voices and bristle with funny quirks." New York Times bestselling thriller writer Lee Child said of Tom's work, "Perfect crime fiction…a convincing world, a cast of compelling characters, and above all a great story" And Publishers Weekly extols, "Piccirilli's mastery of the hard-boiled idiom is pitch perfect, particularly in the repartee between his characters, while the picture he paints of the criminal corruption conjoining the innocent and guilty in a small Long Island community is as persuasive as it is seamy. Readers who like a bleak streak in their crime fiction will enjoy this well-wrought novel." Keir Graff of Booklist wrote, "There's more life in Piccirilli's THE LAST KIND WORDS (and more heartache, action, and deliverance) than any other novel I've read in the past couple of years." And Kirkus states, "Consigning most of the violence to the past allows Piccirilli (The Fever Kill, 2007, etc.) to dial down the gore while imparting a soulful, shivery edge to this tale of an unhappy family that's assuredly unhappy in its own special way."
