BONES OF BRITTANY

I have been listening to the Surreal Grotesque podcast for a while now. I started because Daniel Gonzales read one of Grizz’s stories, The last man on Earth sat in a room, from their Apocolypse issue. (Listen to that episode HERE).
I really fell in love with Daniel’s reading voice, and started listening to the SG podcasts when I would lay down for the night.

I started listening even more after I submitted my very first short story to be considered for their Phobias edition, (rejected), and they started having more guest speakers on the shows. It was during Episode 15 that I heard Brittany Warren read a few of her pieces that were published in the previous issue.
Poet and weaver of words, Brittany Warren, writes some of the most beautiful dark poetry that I have ever read. Her first poetry collection, Beasts and Burdens, is available exclusively on Barnes & Noble. As soon as I heard her recite some of her work, I came directly to WordPress to find her blog BONES OF BRITTANY.

With so many excellent pieces to choose from, it is so hard to pick a favorite, but, I am going to say that Alice’s Lips and Lullabies is in my top three.

ALICE’S LIPS AND LULLABIES
Singing in the sanity ward,
where rabbits burrow beneath skin–
enriching tickle,
itching tickle–
Alice stares at the wall.

Her lips, once enriched by
the Hatter,
grow concave by crevisso–
moist yet dry contradiction.

Queens eat the crackers,
quickest route to hunger improvised
by throats and diction.

Spades capture hearts,
mimicking and licking ventricles
of Bathory blood and whispers.

Lullabies crawl in crescendos
of silk,
cream notes spoiled by the dark…
